Overview
The Diploma in Periodontology (Level 7) is an advanced postgraduate programme designed for dentists who want to develop both restorative excellence and comprehensive periodontal expertise. Approved by EduQual, the programme combines the scientific foundations of restorative dentistry with contemporary periodontal assessment, treatment and maintenance, enabling delegates to manage increasingly complex cases with greater confidence.
By integrating these complementary disciplines into one structured qualification, delegates gain the knowledge and practical skills needed to diagnose periodontal disease accurately, stabilise oral health before restorative treatment, and deliver more predictable long-term clinical outcomes. The result is a more confident clinician capable of providing comprehensive care while improving patient health, treatment acceptance and practice growth.
Structure and learning experience
The programme is delivered through a flexible blended learning format, allowing practising dentists to continue working while completing postgraduate education. Delegates complete structured face-to-face teaching alongside interactive online learning, combining seminars, live demonstrations, practical workshops, webinars and extensive digital resources. Practical sessions allow delegates to develop clinical techniques under the guidance of Professor Paul Tipton and an experienced faculty, while online learning reinforces understanding between teaching sessions.
Clinical focus and outcomes
The programme begins by establishing strong restorative foundations, including occlusion, articulators, treatment planning, adhesive dentistry and restorative principles, before expanding into comprehensive periodontal diagnosis, non-surgical therapy, surgical techniques and long-term periodontal maintenance.
Delegates develop confidence in recognising and managing periodontal disease, interpreting clinical and radiographic findings, carrying out contemporary non-surgical treatment and understanding when surgical intervention is indicated. Alongside this, they strengthen restorative decision-making by appreciating the relationship between periodontal health, occlusion and long-term restorative success.
By the end of the programme, delegates will be able to deliver more comprehensive patient care, confidently integrate periodontal treatment into restorative workflows, and improve the predictability and longevity of their clinical outcomes.
Level 7 Diploma
To achieve the Level 7 qualification, participants must complete a series of assessments including structured feedback on practical sessions, reflective write-ups, treatment planning exercises, short-answer questions and multiple-choice examinations.
On successful completion of the programme and all required assessments, delegates are awarded the Level 7 Diploma in Periodontology, together with the Level 7 Certificate in Restorative Dentistry and Level 7 Certificate in Periodontology. These qualifications are approved by EduQual and accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons of England, reflecting internationally recognised postgraduate standards and advanced clinical competence.
